AK/47 question

Ive never owned an ak never owned anything not american firearms wise but after reading some threads here i did some looking around and purchased a norenco ak new with 4 30rd clips and 2 10rd.
It looks nice and feels very good when i look through it sightwise.
Its all black with that hard plastic with a collapsable stock (length wise not folding) i paid 499 for it did i get jipped? and up by the site is a little lever i cant get back down whenever i go do some practicing with it i really dont want this thing jingling around.

Re: AK/47 question

Are you sure its new? I thought there was an import ban on chinese/russian stuff. However, $499 for a norinco isn't bad. Is it milled or stamped receiver?

Show some pictures! I love AK's :D I could tell you more if I saw it.

I am aware that there are 10's of millions of them, but still, I have no idea why AK's are so cheap. Under $500 for something that will fire for hundreds of years....that's a bargain in any book.

I guess it's simple supply/demand.

When I went to pick up that 1911 Taurus yesterday, I almost bought a Yugo AK underfolder that he had instead. :D

Re: AK/47 question

I think romanian AK's are just fine, I've got two that have never let me down. I bought one for $370 and the other for $280. The $280 one was a little lower in quality than the $370 one, but it actually performs better than the $370 one. I've used saigas, they're great too. I might bend up a few flats and make my own from parts kits, thats probably the most economical way to tuck away a small arsenal :D

You'd have to go into a whole lot more detail before I would want to tell you what to file and how much but the "little lever by the sight" sounds to me like the one that retains the gas tube.

Do you know how to remove your gas tube?

Does the lever not go down because it is stiff or because it is loose?

From what you said it sounds like yours has the same issue mine hand, the gas tube was ground down too much and now is loose and jiggly. It's easy to fix, you just have to buy a new gas tube and remove metal slowly till it fights right.

Believe it or not you actually don't want it too tight either, because that can negatively impact your accuracy. There is a maximum length that the gas tube can be and sometimes the guy at the factory just made sure it was ground down low enough rather than carefully fitting it.

Anyway, you want a Chinese gas tube. I got mine from here,

http://www.polytechparts.com/

h-513 at the following site is advertised as fitting, too. Might want to double check before ordering.

http://globaltrades.com/ak_gasblks.html

Anyway, you got a good price on a good AK. The MAK-90 is built on a true AK-47 pattern, not an AKM even though many are stamped. The stamped rifles have a 1.5mm thick reciever, 50% thicker than most Euro AK's, which means they're a bit stronger and combined with the heftier rear sight block they can soak up a bit more heat. MAK-90's can be particularly accurate when fed 8m1.

Re: AK/47 question

Actually while I'm at it I should mention the UltiMak since you'll probably have to replace your gas tube...

The UltiMak is probably the best way to mount an optical sight to your AK, it replaces the gas tube, requires no fitting and works great.

http://ultimak.com/

It costs, but it is worth the price if you're serious about your AK. The main issue with most AK's is they could stand to be a bit more accurate and there are a few easy things to do to help accurize your AK.

The first is the trigger. Chinese AK's have excellent triggers from the factory and the US made G2 double hook trigger is quite nearly as nice. You should probably check your trigger group to see if it's US made if you've got a pistol grip on your MAK-90 or else you're not in compliance with 922r which can get you in trouble. Red Star Arms makes an adjustable trigger group but you'll have to use Loctite once you have it set where you want it. I prefer the G2 for simplicity.

The next is free floating(virtually, anyway) the handguards. If you're using the UltiMak you're good to go on the upper handguard. If not it's a matter of carefully fitting your new gas tube. For the lower handguard you can either come up with a custom piece or buy a milled reciever's lower hand guard and then fit it carefully to where it just barely wedges in place at the rear but is held loose in the front while still remaining solid.

After these there is the issue of the sights. They are fast, but the sight radius is short so accuracy is hindered. Optical sights are even faster and overcome the short sight radius deficiency automatically and they mount well on the UltiMak.

You'll get the most bang for your buck out of a good trigger and an optical sight. To really make the most of the "free float" mod you'll need to look at two more radical steps. The first is handloaded ammo. This can be as easy as tearing down factory loads and rebuilding them for consistency or you can develop your own loads. I've seen guys cut groups in half this way, YMMV.

The next, probably most difficult to make happen but also will give you a serious return, is to have a custom barrel with a reduced gas port installed. A large part of the reason why the AK can be less accurate than other rifles relates to directly to why they are more reliable... it's the reciprocating mass in the action. The Ak's ejection cycle is best described as "vigorous" to say the least. If you tame the cycle down you will theoretically though not necessarily practically reduce reliability under very extreme conditions but you'll also get a gun that isn't doing the shake rattle and roll to such a large degree with each shot.

Re: AK/47 question

Yah i looked at more (hard to do i dont wish my nephew to see me with it) its a MAK-90 Sportser the little lever i pushed up and just cant get it back down,it doesnt seem to have any function i was thinking it might hold the sight inplace but after toying with the sight you just slide it up and down.
This lever is right down from the sight above the action.

Re: AK/47 question

If you have a Norinco mak90 Sporter with a pistol grip you should verify that your gun is 922R compliant. Somebody may have sold you an illegal gun.

These guns were imported with a thumbhole stock. If it has been changed to a pistol grip it MUST have a certain number of American made parts or you risk being in violation of federal law.

Originally it should have looked like the ones on this page
http://www.ak-47.us/MAK-90.php

Other than being exceedingly ugly these are among the best AK variant available.

DBcooper 09-08-2007 01:19 AM

Re: AK/47 question

Mine looks exactly like the second pic elroy, hmm it has a pistol grip though with collapseable stock.

Baphomet Jones 09-08-2007 01:21 AM

Re: AK/47 question

Take a dremel, and carefully etch "US" into some of the other parts, make sure it looks neat like a machine did it. Problem solved :bull-buddy-icon:

Or just buy some U.S. parts. I've never heard of anyone being arrested for not being sec 922 compliant, seems like something they'd nail you for if they arrested you for something else.

DBcooper 09-08-2007 01:31 AM

Re: AK/47 question

I dont understand what is this 922 thing,i bet the stock and grip is american made, maybe attach a marines dagger to it? ohh and mine has a flash suppressor to it that that pic doesnt show. erh maybe not suppresor but different type of sight at the end,il call em monday and ask some questions regarding it i dont want any illegal gun thats for sure.

by the while at the shop the guy helping me was complaining about ron paul people calling there wanting to put out flyers and ammo was getting low in 7.62 so i bought 200rds people were looking at me odd walking out very uncomfortable.

F**k the federal gun law. Soon we'll be using our non-compliant AK's against an oppressive Federal Government!

This lever is right down from the sight above the action.

That lever if pointed up will alow you to remove the gas tube thing( what ever that called) and when it's down it locks it in place.

You may have to fiddle with it. To remove the gas tube the lever must be up. Then you grasp the rear of the gas tube and lift up. Sometimes you will need to slide it forward some for it to lift up.

To re-install the gas tube reverse the above instructions. The gas tube should not be so tight that it is against either the front gas block, or the barrel block. Kinda just floating between them.

Congratulations on a fine purchase. Don't worry about the FRNs.

You should be pleased for a long time.

AKs are designed to be shot and left dirty in the closet.

I wonder how many people have ever been prosecuted for violating that provision of 922r. anybody? anybody plead out or done any time for it? I doubt it. lmk if you have actual information about that happening.

There's an ever present, unending debate over which is best, ARs or AKs, raging across the internet and in gun shops every day sending bile and bitter insults spewing both ways. This debate has turned fathers against sons, best friends against one another, and........well you get the point. The author is of the opinion that there are of course pros and cons to each family of rifle, and I refuse to engage in what is "best". As one who loves them all, especially the AK and AR series, I thought I'd pass on some of the knowledge I have gained over the years concerning these wildly different weapons. As a bonus, I'll toss in my knowledge of another favorite family of weapons at the Bunker, just because they are very popular these days and I often ramble about them. So, here, for the aid of those hammering one another in the debate, is some unbiased, non-slanted, untainted raw knowledge about the AK, the AR, and the Mosin Nagant.
